Digital Communication Infrastructure to develop in Odisha

Digital Communication Infrastructure to develop in Odisha

A strong vision of the Electronics and IT department is to use IT and electronics to transform Odisha into innovation and knowledge-based society, focusing on inclusive growth through citizen-centric, participatory governance. The state government is also working to create an ICT-enabled environment to enable citizen-centric service delivery as well as to boost productivity and efficiency.

Among the various unique challenges, reliable connectivity is one of the major issues in the state, especially in the extremist-affected hilly and forest areas. Nearly 8,000 villages don’t have mobile connectivity, which is restricting citizens to get the benefits of e-governance services. The banking business has also not penetrated in most of the rural areas due to poor connectivity. The teledensity is 81.06 which is less than the national average of 93.23 and rural teledensity is nearly 50 per cent, which is a concern for the improvement of rural economy through digital initiatives.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will come out with new rules for DTH and cable operators from February 1, 2019 and has started sending out text messages to all subscribers about the upcoming changes to television tariffs, which apply to all DTH, local cable operators as well. The new rules mean that the customers have to choose their own 100 or more channels, and pay exactly what the broadcaster is charging for these channels.

The new rules will empower customers to pay for what channels that they watch, rather than rely on pre-decided packs by DTH companies or their local cable operators. TRAI in its messages to customers has given a link to the channel tariffs and how these will impact the cable TV bill. Here are the details -

New TRAI rules for DTH & cable operators
