How NHAI’s Sukhad Yatra is Making Highways Easier

Sukhad Yatra, a highway-utility mobile application from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), was launched as a step further towards the realisation of the Central government’s drive to integrate technology in and digitalise the highways sector.

The mobile application – launched on March 7, 2018 – serves the purpose of increasing safety in, bringing transparency to, and supporting the development of Highways through the direct involvement of its key stakeholder– the commuter.

The highway-utility application is a part of the Centre’s bid to modernise India’s highway infrastructure, which is a cluster project comprised of several other subprojects such as Wayside Amenities and Electronic Toll Collection.

Sukhad Yatra aids both WSA and ETC with its in-built tools. These tools cover one or more aspects of both the projects, such as buying FASTags and locating civic amenities on or near highways.

NHAI’s Sukhad Yatra Eases Highway Journey

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the supervision of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) launched a standalone digital guide for highway commuters. The application was proposed to safeguard motorists and improve their experience on national highways in the country.

The Centre’s autonomous agency, National Highways Authority of India, with the assistance of the ComVision (India) Pvt Ltd, designed and developed the application. Sukhad Yatra has built-in GPS system that gives location-specific information to the highway users.

Sukhad Yatra allows users to locate nearby Toll gates and amenities in the vicinity of their highway. Motorists can get information on nearby facilities such as restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs, restrooms, and more. Now, motorists can locate Toll gantries with one click. Sukhad Yatra gives real-time data including the expected halting time at Toll plazas and facilities nearby.

NHAI Gets Directed By Supreme Court to Open Eastern Peripheral Expressway Before May 31st

The Supreme Court of India directed the National Highways Authority of India to open the Eastern Peripheral Expressway for the usage of the public before May 31st. They issued a notice asking the authorities explanation as to why they were waiting for the inauguration of the expressway by the Prime Minister and delaying the inaugural of the same. The 135-km stretch of the expressway connecting Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Palwal has been directed to be opened by the end of this month in a hearing conducted on May 10th 2018 by the Supreme Court.

The construction of the Eastern and Western peripheral expressways was initiated back in 2006 after the court ordered building a ring road outside the periphery of the national capital for managing the traffic that is not bound for Delhi. NHAI Initiates New Surveillance System for National Highways

Taking a cue from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) initiated the installation of a new surveillance system for national highways. The surveillance facility is a leg of the NHAI’s ongoing Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), which also is known as Traffic Incident Emergency Management System (TIMS).

By the end of 2018, the National Highways Authority of India may make the new surveillance system functional at ten major Toll plazas. In the long run, the autonomous agency will expand it to 200 plazas. The project aims to subsume existing security and traffic infrastructure at all Toll gates. The initial phase of the project is estimated to be completed in 6 months from the time of initiation.
